The story of Kenya’s growth is often told through skyscrapers and highways. But the real, transformative revolution is happening quietly, beneath the surface, in the pipes and sanitation systems of our rapidly expanding towns.
The Kenya Towns Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation Programme (KTSWSSP) is not just an infrastructure project; it is a national promise to secure the health, dignity, and economic future of over 400,000 families.
Water is dignity
For too long, the lack of reliable water has been a silent tax on our citizens, particularly women and children. It is a tax paid in time, health, and lost opportunity.
The KTSWSSP is ending that tax. By delivering reliable, near-24-hour water access, the project is giving back an estimated 4 to 6 hours per day to households.
Imagine the impact: a mother can now dedicate that time to her small business, a student can focus on their studies, and a family can enjoy a cleaner, healthier home.
This "Time Dividend" is the most emotive and powerful measure of the project’s success, directly fueling local commerce and creating over 15,000 new jobs.
The investment in modern sanitation for over 1.3 million people is equally vital. It is a shield against disease, projected to reduce waterborne illnesses by 25-35% in high-density areas.
This is the true meaning of development: securing the health of our people so they can pursue their dreams.

The power of partnership
The scale of the KTSWSSP demands a unified national effort.
This project is a testament to the power of collaboration, driven by the Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA), Tanathi Water Works Development Agency, and Coast Water Works Development Agency, with strategic support from the African Development Bank (AfDB).
This partnership ensures that the project’s benefits are not isolated but are strategically deployed across the country, affecting 19 towns from the bustling urban centres of Kiambu and Machakos to the coastal regions.
This unified approach is how we ensure that the growth of one town does not come at the expense of another, creating a cohesive, resilient national urban network.

The future is sustainable: A Blueprint for growth
The KTSWSSP is a blueprint for how a developing nation can achieve Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11).
It recognises that for our towns to grow, they must be built on a foundation of sustainability. The project’s innovative approach to utilisation—encouraging property owners to connect to the new sewer system by positioning it as a cost-saving investment that increases property value—is a strategic masterstroke.
It ensures the long-term financial viability of the water service providers and secures the public investment for generations to come.
The momentum is clear: with projects operational and advanced construction underway across the country, the KTSWSSP is actively laying the Urban Foundation that will allow Kenya to achieve its national development goals.
This is a story of hope, dignity, and strategic vision. It is a story of a nation securing its future, one clean drop at a time.
