Based on the 2023 data from the UN FAO, the majority of protein consumption in Africa is derived from plant-based sources, accounting for 77.2% of the average daily intake.
This highlights a significant reliance on crops like legumes, grains, and nuts across the continent.
Animal-based proteins make up a much smaller portion of the diet.
Meat is the secondary source at 12.1%, followed by Dairy at 5.4% and Seafood at 4.2%.
Eggs contribute the least to the daily protein share at just 1.1%.
Collectively, these non-plant sources represent less than a quarter of the total protein intake for the population according to this study.
