Alpha Onyango aims a shot in training as teammate Geoffrey Ochieng looks on/GOR

Gor Mahia midfielder Alpha Onyango has warned that K’Ogalo will leave nothing to chance as they battle to defend their place at the summit of the Kenyan Premier League in pursuit of a historic 22nd top-flight title.

Onyango has praised his side’s growing confidence, intensity, and renewed work ethic, insisting the champions are hitting top gear at the right time.

Gor Mahia underlined their title credentials on Sunday with a commanding 3–0 victory over Mara Sugar at Nyayo National Stadium—a result that kept them firmly perched at the top of the table and reignited belief that their title charge is gathering unstoppable momentum.

The Harambee Stars midfielder also hailed the fierce rivalry with AFC Leopards, describing the neck-and-neck battle between the two giants as the most thrilling season of his career.

The Gor Mahia–AFC Leopards rivalry, long regarded as the heartbeat of Kenyan football, has reached fever pitch this season. Both sides are locked on 33 points, with K’Ogalo leading the standings only on goal difference.

Rather than feeling the pressure, Onyango believes the relentless chase from Ingwe has sharpened Gor Mahia’s focus.

“This is the most exciting season I’ve ever played,” Onyango said. “When your rivals are chasing you every weekend, there’s no room for error. It forces everyone to dig deeper, train harder, and fight for every point.”

After a stuttering start that saw unexpected points slip away, Gor Mahia are finally finding their rhythm. The emphatic win over Mara Sugar was more than just three points—it was a statement of intent.

Shap passing, relentless pressing, and clinical finishing signalled a return to the champions’ dominant best.

“We are building momentum,” Onyango said. “Earlier on, we dropped points, but now we are picking up from where we left off after the Kakamega Homeboyz game. The momentum we’re building will really help us in the matches ahead.”

While results grab headlines, Onyango says the true transformation has come through improved commitment and discipline within the squad.

“It’s the work ethic and commitment that have made the difference,” he noted. “Everyone is ready for tackles, ready to chase every ball, and willing to fight for the badge. That wasn’t always there, but now it’s helping us grow.”

Against Mara Sugar, Gor Mahia pressed aggressively, tracked every runner, and played with intensity from the first whistle. Nyayo Stadium provided the perfect stage as K’Ogalo dominated possession, pinned their opponents deep, and punished mistakes with authority.

By full time, the scoreboard read 3–0, and the league table told an even sweeter story—top spot retained, belief restored.

Gor Mahia now sit first with 33 points and a game in hand, level with AFC Leopards but ahead on goal difference—a fine margin, Onyango says, must be fiercely protected.

“We are Gor Mahia. Being at the top is where we belong, and we’ll work tirelessly to stay there,” he said.

Beyond pride, history beckons. A 22nd league title would further cement Gor Mahia’s dominance and mark the season as a landmark campaign.

“We know what is at stake,” Onyango added. “But titles are won game by game. We can’t think too far ahead—we must deliver consistently.”

Despite the emphatic win, Onyango warned against complacency in a league that punishes even the slightest lapse.

“The league is tough. If you switch off even for a moment, you get punished,” he said.

With a congested fixture list ahead and the rivalry with AFC Leopards pushing standards ever higher, Gor Mahia appear to be gathering momentum at precisely the right moment.

Onyango’s message is clear: K’Ogalo will fight to the end, defend their summit status, and aim to etch their name into Kenyan football history once more.
