A family in Siaya, Alego, is appealing to well-wishers for assistance to clear medical and mortuary bills at Mbagathi Hospital so they can bury their kin.

The deceased, Francis Achilo, was admitted to Mbagathi Hospital on November 8, 2025, and later died on November 30, 2025.

According to family members, the hospital is demanding Sh39,190 in medical fees and a further Sh47,000 in mortuary charges, bringing the outstanding bill to Sh86,190.

Mbagathi Hospital confirmed that Achilo was admitted at the hospital and said they can waive 20 per cent of the hospital bill if the family clears the mortuary charges.

The family says they are also seeking Sh150,000 to cover transportation of the body from Nairobi to Siaya and to cater for burial logistics.

“We are unable to raise the amount needed to give our kin a befitting send-off,” said Charles Owino, a family member, who appealed to Kenyans of goodwill for support.

Achilo, who reportedly fell ill in November, was rushed to the hospital by friends before succumbing weeks later.

According to Charles, the family is following up with the hospital to have the Social Health Authority clear part of the bills.

He says even if the hospital bill is cleared and Achilo’s body given to them, they do not have the means to cover the burial costs.

“If we are given the body and we do not have the means to transport it from Nairobi to Migori, what shall we do?” he said.

Charles added that the family in Siaya has been conducting mini-harambees and have so far managed to collect Sh35,000.

“We cannot do the harambees every day at home because we are few, and due to the tough economic times, people are not able to help us raise all the money. We are thankful for those who have come forward to help us. We pledge with well-wishers to help us bury our son,” Charles said.

He further added that the family is following up with the hospital and the chief to have the bills waived.
