A police officer based at Ahero Police Station in Nyando Sub-county was on Wednesday morning found dead in his house in what police suspect was a case of suicide.

According to police reports, the incident was reported at around 11.00 a.m. This is after the deceased colleague said he had tried unsuccessfully to reach the officer, after the two spoke the previous day.

During their conversation, the deceased had reportedly confided that he was under stress due to unresolved domestic issues at home. After several unanswered phone calls, the colleague went to the officer’s house within the Ahero Police Lines to check on him.

Upon arrival, he found the door locked from the inside and received no response despite knocking and calling out. He then peeped through a window and saw the officer hanging from the roof using a rope.

The scene was immediately reported, prompting officers from the Nyando Sub-County Police Command (SCPC), the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer (SCCIO), and the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) to visit the house.

The officers confirmed that the door was locked from the inside and the body was hanging from the roof. Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) officers from Kisumu processed the scene, but no suicide note was recovered.

The body was later removed to Ahero County Hospital Mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination. Police have opened an inquest file to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.
