Police in Mlolongo, Machakos County, have seized more than 2,560 bottles of suspected counterfeit liquor in a raid carried out in the township.

The consignment was recovered during an operation conducted by officers from the Mlolongo Police Station, led by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), on Saturday.

OCS Peter Mugambi said the liquor was found in Mlolongo Township, Athi River Subcounty.

The operation was part of a crackdown on illicit alcohol along the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway.

The officer said police acted on information received from the public.

“Today, we received information from members of the public. My officers and I went there,” the OCS said.

The OCS spoke to reporters at the Mlolongo police station shortly after the seizure.

The seized bottles are believed to be counterfeit, the officer said, adding that the operation reflects efforts to combat counterfeit alcohol and protect public health.

“We recovered illicit liquor. There were 2,560 bottles in total, packed in 64 cartons,” the OCS said.

No arrests were made during the operation, but police said they are pursuing suspects to face prosecution once apprehended.

The OCS warned consumers and those involved in the illicit liquor trade in Mlolongo and its environs, saying they would be arrested and charged under the law.

“We also warn bar operators who sell illicit liquor. We will arrest them and take them to court. The fight against illicit alcohol is ongoing. We want to make Mlolongo safe for consumers. They should only purchase legitimate products,” he said.

The officer said police are working with the public to rid the town and surrounding areas of illicit liquor, and urged residents to continue sharing information with authorities for timely intervention.
