Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi is assessing heavy financial losses after his business premises near Nyayo National Stadium were flattened in a dramatic midnight operation on Tuesday.
Excavators and bulldozers, escorted by heavily armed police officers, moved in shortly after midnight to bring down several structures along Douglas Wakiihuri Road.
The affected area, which previously housed a bustling hub of activity, was transformed into a scene of devastation by morning.

The operation also led to the burning of tyres on the road, suggesting a brief attempt by residents and businesspeople to resist the demolition before being overwhelmed by the heavy security presence.

By dawn, Douglas Wakiihuri Road remained blocked by rubble, significantly disrupting movement in the Nairobi West area.
The Legal Standoff
The demolitions took place despite a pending court case filed by Wamatangi through his company, Superclean Shine Enterprises. The Governor had moved to the Milimani Commercial Magistrates' Court seeking protection from what he described as "verbal threats" of eviction.

In his petition, Wamatangi maintained that he had leased the land from Kenya Railways Corporation for over 20 years and had a valid subsisting tenancy.
However, Nairobi police boss George Seda stated that the management had notified the owner to vacate, but met resistance.

Livelihoods at Stake
Beyond the physical property damage, the demolition has had a profound human cost. Dozens of workers—including mechanics, carpet cleaners, car washers, and restaurant attendants—arrived at their workplace only to find it reduced to ruins.

The clearing of the site is reportedly linked to the broader infrastructure plans for the railway corridor leading to the upcoming Talanta Stadium.
