President William Ruto is scheduled to visit Nyeri County on Sunday to attend a church service and officially inaugurate the ACK Church Plaza in Chinga Ward.
The visit comes as political activity intensifies in Mt Kenya ahead of the 2027 General Election, with the UDA party holding grassroots elections on Saturday aimed at strengthening its local structures.
Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga confirmed the President’s visit, noting it will take place in the Kariki area.
“Yes, it’s true. He will be in Nyeri, Kariki area,” the governor said.
Energy PS Alex Wachira also confirmed the visit, adding that the President will preside over the disbursement of Nyota youth funds.
“It’s a youth programme for disbursement of funds to the Nyota beneficiaries,” Wachira said.
Chinga MCA Kiruga Thuku said President Ruto will be the chief guest during the inauguration of the ACK Church Plaza.
Posting on social media, he described the visit as historic, noting that MPs, senators, the Woman Representative, clergy, and residents across the ward will attend.
Political analyst Charles Mwangi observed that Ruto’s visit, coming a few months after the closely contested Mbeere North by-election, highlights the President’s engagement with the region.
He said Mt Kenya has become politically vibrant, with grassroots activities closely watched due to the upcoming elections.
Nyeri governor aspirant Thuo Mathenge welcomed the President’s visit, praising Ruto for his support to the region and urging local leaders to focus on unity and development rather than divisive politics.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua also addressed the visit, referencing a Thursday rally in Nyeri that descended into clashes.
Gachagua alleged that his meeting had been disrupted, but thanked residents for helping maintain peace
Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu expressed concerns over Gachagua’s actions, stating that the former deputy president was insecure about Ruto’s visit.
Wambugu added that his disagreement with Gachagua is ideological rather than personal.
Kiamwangi MCA Kungu Smart urged residents to prioritise peace and collaboration, highlighting Mt Kenya’s role as a key region in national politics.
“Mt Kenya has long been a kingmaker region in Kenyan politics, with voters influencing presidential outcomes. Both President Ruto and former Deputy President Gachagua are actively engaging local leaders and residents as they seek to cement support ahead of the 2027 General Election,” he said.
