Kenyan musician Stevo Simple Boy has shared insights into his family background, personal faith, and experiences within the music industry during a recent interview with Dr. Ofweneke.
The discussion provided a detailed account of his upbringing, current family life, and challenges encountered since achieving national recognition.
Roots in Kibera and Early Support
Stevo Simple Boy revealed that he grew up in Kibera as the youngest of eight children, seven of whom are still alive. "Tulikuwa watoto wanane... mmoja alifariki sasa tumebaki saba. Mimi ni last born."
He said that while he had a passion for music from a young age, not everyone around him supported his ambitions, raising doubts about whether music could be a sustainable career path.
The musician credited his mother as his strongest supporter during his early years. He explained that she encouraged him to listen to music programs on local radio stations, including Citizen Radio’s Mseto, to help nurture his talent.

He said her belief in his abilities played a critical role in shaping his confidence, particularly at a time when resources and opportunities were limited. "Mwanangu kitie bidii... jikaze."
Stevo noted that his mother continues to follow his progress closely, often reacting when she sees his music videos on television or online platforms.
He said her continued encouragement remains an important source of motivation. The artist also mentioned plans to introduce his family more publicly to the media in the future.
Experiences in the Music Industry
While Stevo Simple Boy’s journey has been guided by love and encouragement, he also spoke about what he described as a “darker” side of the music industry. He revealed that practices such as witchcraft and secret societies exist among some people in the business. “Uganga iko kila mahali... freemason pia wako kwa hii industry yetu,” he said.
He said that some individuals engage in such practices in an attempt to sabotage others or gain influence. While he did not name specific people, he asserted that these realities are widely acknowledged within the industry.
Alleged Offer and Refusal
The musician recounted a moment when he received a suspicious financial offer. “Nasema stevo tunakupatia 10 million ukuje tuone... nikasema 10 million hapo kuna jambo,” he explained, indicating that he chose to decline due to caution and his personal principles.
He explained that the nature of the call raised suspicions, leading him to believe it was connected to a secret society.
According to the musician, he chose to decline the offer by delaying the conversation and never received another follow-up call. He described his decision as a personal choice guided by faith and a desire to avoid compromising his beliefs.
Faith and Career Decisions
Throughout the interview, Stevo Simple Boy emphasized that his personal faith influences many of his decisions within the music industry. He said he strives to maintain integrity and avoid situations that conflict with his beliefs, despite opportunities that may offer financial gain or industry influence. "Bado lakini yote najua Mungu atatenda itafika mbali." He stated.
He also noted that his faith, combined with the support of his family, continues to shape his approach to music and public engagements. The artist described this foundation as key to navigating the challenges of the entertainment industry while staying true to his values.
