After a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Kakamega Homeboyz on Sunday, AFC Leopards are determined to restore pride when they face Nairobi United at Nyayo Stadium on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.

Leopards remain second in the Kenyan Premier League table on 24 points, level with the leaders but trailing on goal difference. Nairobi United, meanwhile, arrive on the back of a convincing 3-1 victory over Shabana and are intent on consolidating their mid-table position while preparing for continental competition.

Leopards' head coach Fred Ambani is acutely aware of the challenges his side faces as they attempt to reclaim top spot in the league. “Sunday’s defeat was painful, but it will fuel our determination against Nairobi United,” he stated. The coach emphasised the importance of squad resilience, noting that the players must respond not only for themselves but for the supporters.

“We have the squad depth to recover, and our fans deserve a strong response at Nyayo,” Ambani said. Reflecting on the loss to Homeboyz, he stressed that mistakes are instructive rather than punitive. “Mistakes from the Homeboyz game are lessons, not setbacks. We will correct them immediately,” he explained.

Strategic execution will be pivotal in Wednesday’s match. “Our midfielders must dominate possession, and our forwards must finish chances—this is key to victory,” he stated.

Ambani acknowledged the quality of the visiting side but remained confident. “Nairobi United is dangerous, but we trust our preparation and tactics will give us the edge,” he said. For Ambani, home advantage is not simply a convenience; it is a responsibility. “Winning at home is non-negotiable. Nyayo Stadium is our fortress, and we intend to defend it fiercely,” he concluded.

Nicholas Muyoti’s Nairobi United approach the fixture with a mixture of confidence and caution. “Our 3-1 win against Shabana proves we can control matches and score goals under pressure,” Muyoti said. Despite this optimism, he was measured in his assessment of the task ahead.

“Joining Leopards won’t be easy, but we believe in our system and the players’ mentality,” he added.

Naibois will be leaning heavily on their mercurial striker, Dancun Omala, who lit up Gusii Stadium on Sunday with a brilliant brace against Shabana. Omala’s explosive pace, clinical finishing, and unpredictable movement make him the focal point of Naibois’ attack, capable of turning any moment into a goal-scoring opportunity.

Discipline, Muyoti insists, will be crucial. “Discipline and focus will determine the outcome; we cannot underestimate Leopards’ quality,” he said.

At the same time, the responsibility falls on the players’ shoulders. “Our attacking players must exploit spaces and be clinical in front of goal,” he added.

Concluding his pre-match assessment, Muyoti emphasised the importance of character and consistency. “Every match is a test of character. We aim to show we are a team capable of challenging the top of the table,” he said.

The Leopards will rely on the creativity and composure of their midfield and forward lines to break down Nairobi United’s defensive organization.

“Our key players know their responsibilities, and we will encourage creativity in the final third,” Ambani said. Conversely, Nairobi United intend to leverage speed and width in their offensive play. “We want to play our style and force Leopards to adapt to our pace,” Muyoti explained.

The stakes for Wednesday’s match extend beyond a single victory. A win for Leopards would restore them to the top of the table, whereas Nairobi United could consolidate a top-five position and build confidence ahead of the CAF Confederation Cup.

Ambani stressed the importance of mental fortitude. “Mistakes happen. The key is to correct them and show character. We want the fans to see a strong, attacking Leopards side on Wednesday,” he said.

Muyoti echoed the sentiment on focus and preparation. “We respect Leopards and their history, but we are ready to play our football. Discipline and focus will be our priorities,” he said.

Both teams understand that tactical discipline, fitness, and mental sharpness will determine the outcome. The match will serve as a high-stakes test ahead of continental competition, especially for Nairobi United, who will later face Shabana and Moroccan side Wydad AC.

“Our coaching team and players are ready for the challenge against Shabana and later Wydad AC. Every match is an opportunity to measure ourselves,” Muyoti said.

Naibois have been boosted by the arrival of Ugandan left-back Mustapha Kizza from NEC FC. A seasoned Cranes international, Kizza brings not only experience and composure but also a sharp attacking threat down the left flank, capable of unlocking defences and injecting pace into Naibois’ frontline.

His presence adds both solidity at the back and a creative spark going forward, making him an instant asset for Nicholas Muyoti’s squad.

Roy Okal and John Njuguna have also joined from Sofapaka and Tusker, respectively, injecting skill, leadership, and versatility into the squad.

The club has also reinforced its technical staff to bolster tactical depth and fitness. Muyoti noted that the addition of Boniface Musa and Sadiq Ambani brings valuable experience.

“Boniface Musa and Sadiq Ambani bring experience that strengthens both tactics and fitness,” he said. The coach said preparation for continental competitions remains central to the team’s focus.

“We are preparing not just for Leopards, but for our upcoming CAF Confederation Cup fixtures,” Muyoti explained.
