As schools reopen across the country, the Ministry of Interior and National Administration has issued a public advisory aimed at improving the safety of learners as they return to school.
The guidance focuses on responsible travel, vigilance, and shared accountability among parents, students, and drivers.
In a notice titled Tips on Safe Travelling Back to School, the ministry emphasised the need for parents and guardians to play an active role in protecting children during this transition period.
“Parents and guardians are encouraged to ensure that children are safe and always accounted for. Know where your child is at all times,” the notice read in part.
Students are also directly addressed in the safety message.
The ministry advises learners to plan their journeys carefully, travel early, and avoid unnecessary late-night travel whenever possible.
Early travel is presented as a key measure to reduce exposure to potential risks along the way.
Public transport safety features prominently in the advisory. The ministry instructs commuters to “Use only recognised public transport and registered SACCOs when travelling.”
This guidance aims to promote accountability and reduce risks associated with unregulated transport services, particularly during peak school travel periods.
The advisory also highlights the importance of collective responsibility among students. Learners are encouraged to look out for one another.
“Look out for one another and travel in groups where possible to enhance safety,” the ministry urged.
Group travel is presented as a simple but effective way to reduce vulnerability during journeys to and from school.
Beyond physical safety, the ministry also draws attention to behavioural risks that may arise during travel.
Students are advised to remain alert and make responsible choices while on the journey.
“While on the journey, avoid bad company, stay away from drugs, and do not engage in any criminal activity,” learners were urged.
The message reinforces that safety is not only about the mode of transport but also about personal conduct and decision-making.
Drivers are equally reminded of their role in safeguarding lives on the road, with the ministry calling on them to prioritise safety at all times.
According to the advisory, drivers should focus on the safety of themselves, their passengers, and other road users.
This underscores the shared responsibility among all road users during the busy back-to-school period.
By issuing clear and practical guidance, the Ministry of Interior aims to reduce preventable incidents and ensure a smooth and secure return to school for learners nationwide.
