According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) report on the poverty and distributional impacts of fiscal policy, the share of government expenditure on education as a percentage of total expenditure has ranged from 16.5% in 2018/19 to 19.5% in 2022/23.

The allocation peaked in 2022/23, signalling a continued prioritisation of education despite other competing fiscal demands.

In terms of GDP, the share has been more modest, fluctuating between 4.2% and 5.7% over the past five fiscal years.

The highest GDP allocation, 5.7%, occurred in 2018/19, while the lowest, 4.2%, was recorded in 2021/22. This trend highlights that while education remains a budgetary priority, its proportion of national output is relatively stable and modest compared to total expenditure.
