The festive season, traditionally a period of joy and celebration, is increasingly becoming financially and socially challenging for many Kenyans.
A recent survey by Infotrak, conducted in December 2025, reveals that 78% of respondents are unable to celebrate due to a lack of money. This striking figure highlights the economic pressures households are facing amid rising costs of living, inflation, and stagnant incomes.
The inability to afford even modest celebrations reflects broader socio-economic challenges affecting families across the country.
Interestingly, 16% of respondents reported having no interest in celebrating the festive period. This may reflect changing social dynamics, shifts in cultural practices, or personal circumstances that make traditional celebrations less appealing or relevant.
It also indicates a segment of the population that may prioritise personal or family well-being over conventional festivities.
Additionally, 11% of Kenyans stated they will be working during the holidays, underscoring the demands of modern labor patterns. For many, economic necessity and employment responsibilities outweigh the opportunity for leisure and family gatherings.
Overall, these findings illustrate that the festive period, while culturally significant, is increasingly influenced by financial constraints and personal priorities.
