Status of SGBV in Kenya

Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) remains a critical concern in Kenya, with cases reported across all regions.

Western, Nyanza, Coast, and Central areas continue to record high incidences, while North Eastern reports significant abuse by relatives, teachers, and local leaders.

Hotspot counties include Kisii, Nyamira, Narok, Vihiga, Kajiado, Bomet, Kilifi, and Taita Taveta.

Key drivers of SGBV include poverty, drug and alcohol abuse, illicit brew dens, and coastal sexual exploitation.

Harmful practices such as “fish-for-sex,” early or forced marriages, and entrenched cultural norms further worsen the crisis.

Child sexual abuse is notably rising in Kisii, underscoring the urgent need for action.
