The Kenyan media industry is grappling with profound grief after the unexpected passing of veteran broadcaster Festus Amimo on Sunday, December 7, 2025.

The Voice That Woke Up Luo Nation

Affectionately known as “Jakom” or “Wuod Awasi,” Festus Amimo was the heartbeat of Mayienga FM, KBC’s popular Dholuo station broadcasting from Kisumu on 93.5 FM.

For years, his rich baritone and calm authority anchored the flagship morning show Gari Mokinyi, blending news, politics, sports, and community issues with unmatched warmth. Appointed head of station in 2022, he turned the platform into a powerful tool for social good.

A Legacy of Compassion and Action

Amimo was renowned for turning airwaves into lifelines. In September 2025, he spearheaded an on-air fundraiser that raised over KSh 100,000 within hours to prevent a bright student from Rang’ala Girls High School from dropping out. Listeners remember him not just as a presenter, but as a community mobiliser who championed education and welfare.

Listeners Sense a Quiet Farewell

Many fans are haunted by his final broadcasts last week. Several insist his usual banter with the sports presenter carried an unusually poignant tone.

“The last time I heard him… it felt like he was bidding us goodbye,” wrote Ojuka Olang. Emma K’Anjejo added: “Was Jakom quietly saying farewell on his last day at the station?”

Flood of Heartfelt Tributes

Social media has been overwhelmed with grief:

Gregory Ochieng: “Poleni sana to the family and colleagues. May he rest in eternal peace.”

Meshack Otichro: “Eiii wuod Awasi… a humble, compassionate gentleman. We have lost a great man.”

Charles Ocham: “One day even death itself will perish. Rest well.”

Jaro Mkubwa: “Whaaaat!!! So painful. May his soul rest in perfect peace.”

Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo described him as “a warm soul and true friend whose kindness touched everyone.”
