Fafi sub-clan backs single candidate for MP in 2027

Members of the Rer Kassim sub-clan of the larger Abduwaq community have endorsed Mohamed Subey as their sole candidate for the Fafi parliamentary seat ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Rer Kassim is one of seven who make up the Abduwaq clan, the largest in the constituency.

Among those who contested were former MP Abdikarim Osman, Mohamed Subey and Dr Mohamed Diis, resulting in a split vote that paved the way for Salah Yakub of the Rer Harun sub-clan to clinch the seat.

The community, which met on Monday in a day-long consultative forum, unanimously agreed to back Subey, who finished second in the 2022 race.

Elder Mohamed Ali, who spoke on behalf of the Rer Kassim, said the endorsement marked a fresh start rooted in unity and collective vision.

“In 2022, we went into the elections deeply divided. Our votes were scattered and our strength was lost. This time, we are wiser. We have chosen unity, strategic thinking and community-driven leadership,” he said.

Negotiated democracy, a time-honoured system within Somali society, continues to guide political decisions in Northeastern Kenya.

Through this consensus-based process, elders, religious leaders and opinion shapers deliberate to identify suitable candidates rather than compete through divisive campaigns.

Nanighi MCA Abdullahi Ibrahim echoed the call for unity, urging the community to speak with one voice.

“We all saw what happened last time. Going forward, we must act with one purpose and stand with one heart. Our unity is our strength, and our strength is our path to development,” he said.

In his acceptance speech, Subey thanked the Rer Kassim for the trust they had placed in him.

“I am deeply humbled by this endorsement. This is not just a personal milestone but a collective step forward, a sign of unity and shared purpose. The journey to reclaim our rightful representation has just begun,” he said.

Subey also praised his fellow aspirants for stepping down in his favour.

“Your sacrifice and selflessness will be remembered as a turning point in strengthening our community’s voice. Together, we will work to ensure Fafi’s growth and representation,” he said.
