Kenya’s music industry is reeling from the loss of Kevin Mburu Kinyanjui, popularly known by his stage name Shalkido or Shalkido Ga Cucu, who died following a tragic road accident on Sunday, 5 October 2025.
According to reports, the 27-year-old musician was involved in a motorcycle crash along Thika Road while returning to Nairobi after performing in Thika.
Witnesses claimed it may have been a hit-and-run, though police investigations are still underway.
He was rushed to the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH), where doctors admitted him to the Intensive Care Unit with severe head injuries, internal bleeding, and a fractured leg.
Despite hours of medical attention, he was pronounced dead at around 6:30 pm on Monday, 6 October 2025.
Early Life and Background
Born in Nairobi, Kenya, Kevin Mburu Kinyanjui grew up with a passion for music that developed during his teenage years.
He later adopted the stage name Shalkido, and as his artistry matured, he added Ga Cucu — a Kikuyu phrase meaning of the grandmother — to honour the woman who had played a central role in his upbringing.
Those close to him described Shalkido as humble, humorous, and deeply committed to his art. His early life was marked by perseverance, as he balanced education, odd jobs, and his growing interest in urban music.

Rise to Fame with Sailors Gang
Shalkido’s breakthrough came in the late 2010s when he joined the Gengetone group Sailors Gang, one of the most influential acts of Kenya’s urban youth music wave. Alongside his bandmates Miracle Baby, Qoqos Juma, Masilver, and Lexxy Yung, Shalkido helped shape a sound that captured the spirit of a generation.
The group’s debut single “Wamlambez” became a national anthem almost overnight, followed by chart-topping hits like Pekejeng, Wainame, and Queen B Machine.
Their vibrant lyrics, danceable beats, and raw Nairobi street energy placed them among the pioneers of Kenya’s modern urban sound.
Within a short time, Sailors Gang earned widespread fame, brand endorsements, and millions of YouTube views, becoming one of the faces of the Gengetone revolution.
Shalkido, with his distinct flow and creative wordplay, was a standout voice in the group.
The Breakup and Solo Career
After several successful years, the group’s relationship with their then-manager Mwalimu Rachel soured, leading to a highly publicised fallout.

The split left the members to pursue individual careers, with Shalkido choosing a quieter path focused on personal growth and self-expression.

He began experimenting with a mix of Gengetone and Mugithi-inspired sounds, reflecting both his musical roots and his Kikuyu heritage.
His solo releases under the name Shalkido Ga Cucu showed a more mature, soulful side of the artist, revealing his versatility beyond the high-energy club anthems that made him famous.
Despite the creative rebirth, the transition was not easy. The financial instability that often shadows independent musicians hit him hard.
Struggles and Public Appeal for Help
In August 2025, Shalkido opened up publicly about the struggles he faced since leaving the group. He revealed that he was supporting a family, hustling through multiple ventures, yet barely surviving.
“As a Kenyan artiste and a father, nimefika mwisho,” he confessed in a candid interview. “I’ve tried my very best … everything goes south.”
His honesty resonated with many Kenyans, who saw in him a reflection of the difficulties faced by countless creatives navigating the country’s volatile entertainment scene.
Among those who stepped forward to help was Eric Omondi, through his Sisi Kwa Sisi initiative. Omondi gifted Shalkido a motorcycle to help him start a boda boda business, giving him a renewed sense of hope and purpose.
At the time, Shalkido expressed deep gratitude, saying the support would allow him to rebuild his life while continuing to make music on his own terms.

The Final Days
Just weeks after his appeal, tragedy struck. On the evening of 5 October 2025, while returning from a show in Thika, Shalkido was involved in the motorcycle accident that would claim his life.
He was taken to hospital in critical condition and remained under intensive care for a day before succumbing to his injuries the following evening.
His passing shocked the entertainment fraternity, ending a journey that had been marked by both brilliance and struggle.
