Raila Odinga

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has been noticeably absent from the public eye for nearly two weeks, prompting speculation regarding his health, despite assurances from close allies that he is active and well.

As the leader of ODM, Raila's absence is particularly striking as the party gears up for a significant celebration marking its 20th anniversary.

His last notable public appearance was on September 22, during an ODM Parliamentary Group meeting at the Argyle Grand Hotel. He later met Siaya Governor James Orengo at the Siaya Investment Conference.

Since then, he has missed crucial events, including the issuance of nomination certificates to ODM candidates for the upcoming elections.

Reports have emerged suggesting that Raila sought medical treatment abroad a few weeks ago and was subsequently hospitalised at The Nairobi Hospital, where doctors advised him to reduce his political engagements.

However, his close associates, including National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed, have dismissed these claims. Junet said he spoke with Raila and was on his way to meeting him, "He is at the gym. How do you say he is unwell?"

At 80, Raila remains one of Kenya's most influential political figures.

He has since missed other high-profile events, including the funeral of former Public Service Minister Dalmas Otieno, although he contributed Sh2 million to Otieno's family during a fundraiser.

Raila has also been absent from ODM’s anniversary celebrations, which included a recent event in Wajir and a colorful gathering at Gusii Stadium in Kisii.

After the Kisii event, he shared a photo and a message celebrating ODM's resilience. When questioned about his absence from these events, Raila's spokesperson, Dennis Onyango said Raila's team was managing the activities.

Currently, ODM is being represented by three deputy leaders—Kisii Governor Simba Arati, Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Nassir and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi—who have taken the lead in party activities.

On September 30, Raila was again absent when ODM issued nomination certificates to successful candidates, further heightening speculation regarding his health and political future.

This is not the first time Raila's health has been a concern. He was hospitalised for COVID-19 in March 2021, stirring nationwide anxiety. Earlier medical issues included a minor back surgery in Dubai and a complex procedure to drain fluid from his brain in 2010.

Known affectionately as "Baba" by his supporters and even rivals, Raila's current absence is significant in the political landscape. ODM is preparing for a high-profile three-day celebration in Mombasa starting next Friday, with invitations extended to key political figures, including President William Ruto and retired President Uhuru Kenyatta.
