As the conversation flowed, the MCs hinted at a surprise. Moments later, a woman in a striking black-and-white cocktail dress walked onto the stage.

Kato turned, and in an instant his composure melted. It was his mother, who had flown in from the United States, where she lives.

The guitarist rushed into her arms, the two holding each other in a long, emotional hug as the crowd broke into thunderous applause.

Clearly overwhelmed, Kato was asked when he had last seen his mother. “Earlier this year,” he said softly, still holding back tears.

His mother then turned to Lotan and Cess with a radiant smile and said, “I’m so proud and happy to be here.”
