Kenya’s pop culture phenomenon, MTV Shuga Mashariki, is making a comeback for a second season in early 2026, the MTV Staying Alive Foundation (MTV SAF) has confirmed.
The announcement comes hot on the heels of the show’s explosive 2025 relaunch, which marked MTV Shuga’s return to Kenya after more than a decade. The season not only attracted millions of viewers on BET and YouTube but also reignited conversations around love, ambition, peer pressure, sexual health, mental well-being, and gender-based violence.
Building on a cultural moment
With over 2.8 million YouTube views and more than 81,000 social media interactions recorded during its comeback run, MTV Shuga Mashariki has cemented itself as more than just a TV drama. For many young people across Kenya and beyond, it has become a mirror of their realities and a catalyst for conversations that are often swept under the rug.
“The return of MTV Shuga Mashariki was more than a relaunch, it was a revival of authentic Kenyan storytelling,” said Mitchelle Kimathi, Country Manager (Kenya), MTV SAF. “We’re excited to continue bold storytelling that sparks uncomfortable but necessary conversations while showcasing the voices, realities, and ambitions of Kenyan youth.”

Fresh talent in the spotlight
Season one introduced a vibrant Kenyan cast including Serah Wanjiru, Basil Mungai, Matthew Ngugi, Fatuma Gichuru, Julie Brenda, Fridah Mumbe, Mariam Bishar, Makena Kahuha and Wilson Muchemi. Their gripping performances gave the show both star power and relatability.
As anticipation builds for the second season, closed auditions are already underway to bring new characters into the fold, while fans are buzzing online about which familiar faces might return.
In an exciting twist, MTV SAF has also unveiled 25Flow, a new talent initiative designed to unearth Kenya’s freshest musical acts. In partnership with leading producer So Fresh, the program will mentor emerging musicians and feature their original tracks as part of the show’s soundtrack.
Beyond the drama and music, MTV Shuga Mashariki remains deeply committed to impact. Its first season integrated the Sema Nami chatbot, a confidential platform offering support on issues such as depression, crisis response, mental health, and gender-based violence—underscoring the series’ dual mission of entertainment and social change.
With production set to begin later this year, the countdown is officially on for the highly anticipated new season. Whether it’s the return of beloved characters, fresh storylines, or powerful new soundtracks, MTV Shuga Mashariki promises to once again push boundaries and speak to the heart of Kenyan youth culture.
