On August 25, a woman named Neezy (@Nay_neezyyy) posted a picture of her daughter on X, ready for her first day of middle school. Her caption was simple and heartfelt: "First day of Middle School is crazyyyy..''
The post quickly went viral, attracting over 8.5 million views. But it was the other number that raised alarm: over 3,000 people had bookmarked the photo.
The Alarming Number of Bookmarks
Many users immediately pointed out the concern with the high number of bookmarks. Bookmarks on X are private, so they're often used to save content without it being visible to the public.

For a child's photo to be bookmarked by thousands of strangers was a clear red flag.
"She’s adorable but the 2.6k bookmarks should alarm you not to post your child on here anymore," one user wrote.
"If I was a parent and a pic of my kid got 2k bookmarks, I’d delete that instantly," added another.
The unsettling truth is that children's images can be used by strangers for harmful purposes, from being scraped and manipulated to being used in AI-generated deepfakes.
“Parents often underestimate the permanence and reach of online sharing. Every photo leaves a data trail that could be used against the child later in life.”
The Broader Issue of 'Sharenting'
Neezy defended her choice to post the photos, shifting the focus to the wider issue of 'sharenting' and the risks involved. This term describes the practice of parents regularly posting their children’s lives on social media.
Experts warn that even innocent, everyday photos can be scraped and used in ways that parents can't control. A child's digital footprint starts the moment their photo is posted online, and that footprint can follow them for life.
This incident has reignited a crucial conversation among parents and digital safety experts: how much of a child's life should be broadcast online?
