Renowned televangelist Pastor Victor Kanyari has opened up about the tragic loss of his younger sister, Starlet Wahu, describing the pain his family continues to endure following her untimely death.

Speaking during a recent church service, Pastor Kanyari recalled a heartfelt conversation with his mother, Lucy Nduta, who expressed the hopes she once had for Wahu.

"My mother told me she always believed my sister would be with her in her old age, but she was killed. My sister was murdered. She was a celebrity. My mum said she thought Wahu would take care of her, but unfortunately, her life was cut short," he shared with his congregation.

Pastor Kanyari revealed that after Wahu’s death, his mother transferred her hopes onto his own children.

However, he cautioned against relying too heavily on children for comfort and support, explaining that as they grow older, they naturally pursue their own lives.

"I put my hopes in my children. But now, when I call my son, he says he’s with his son. My daughter says she will come next week. Another says, ‘Wait, I’ll call you back, I’m busy.’ That’s life. Educate them, but don’t put all your hopes in them—they will frustrate you,” he said.

He added that while he has provided his children with good education and opportunities, he does not expect them to fulfil all his needs in old age.

“My daughter is in the UK; she might get married there and never return. My son might also decide to stay abroad. That’s reality, so I must plan for myself before life plans for me.”

Why Wahu Was Buried Quickly

In January 2024, Kanyari also explained why the family laid Wahu to rest just three days after her death. Wahu’s body was discovered in a rental apartment in South B, Nairobi.

The main suspect, John Matara, was arrested and remains in police custody. According to Kanyari, he advised the family to conduct a swift, private burial.

"She died on Thursday morning, and by Saturday 8 a.m., we had buried her with only 20 people present. I told my mother, ‘She is gone and will not come back, so let’s bury her.’ We didn’t want a harambee, we didn’t want shame. Anyone who sent me contributions, I returned the money. I decided I would handle everything myself,” he said.

Painful Lessons

Kanyari reflected on the circumstances surrounding his sister’s death, blaming misplaced trust for her tragic end.

"The only mistake my sister made was trusting someone she didn’t know. She believed him enough to spend the night with him. Condoms and HIV testing kits were found at the scene, but sadly, that man turned out to be a killer. She died at just 24 years old," he said.

The preacher concluded his emotional address with a sobering reminder: “Everyone will die. That is life.”
