In a deeply somber and emotional ceremony, Daniel Muthiani, widely known by his blogging alias "Sniper," was finally laid to rest on Friday in Igembe Central, Meru County.

The burial, a long-awaited moment for his grieving family and community, occurred nearly two years after his gruesome murder, a case that has profoundly impacted the region.

His death ignited significant political tensions and spurred widespread protests, with his voice becoming a symbol of a broader struggle.

Mourners gathered not only to bid their final farewells but also to intensify their demands for an expedited investigation into his death and for those responsible to be held accountable.

A Delayed Farewell

Emotions were raw as the community gathered to pay its final respects to the fallen activist, nearly two years after his tragic death.

This long-awaited send-off, occurring approximately 20 months after his killing, brought to the forefront the protracted battle for answers that has deeply affected his family and supporters.

A poignant tribute from his widow underscored the profound personal loss.

"I lost part of me, to you, for your genuine love and sacrifice you mean for me and our children," she shared, mourning a husband in a million and a devoted family man.

Mourners voiced deep concern over the slow pace of the investigation, stressing the family's fundamental right to justice and much-needed closure. They emphasised that the delay in the case only adds to their anguish.

The Gruesome Discovery

Daniel Muthiani was first reported missing on 2nd December 2023. The search for the popular blogger ended in tragedy just two weeks later, when his disfigured body was discovered in the Motonga River, located in Tharaka Nithi County.

The circumstances surrounding the discovery were immediately deemed questionable, raising alarm bells within the community and among authorities. A subsequent post-mortem examination later revealed the chilling truth: Muthiani had died from strangulation.

This grim finding sparked widespread outrage and fuelled an urgent demand for accountability.

Lingering Questions and Legal Proceedings

The investigation into Muthiani’s death led to the arrest of five suspects in connection with his abduction and murder. However, to the dismay of many, all five suspects have since been released on bond.

The most recent court proceedings related to the case took place in June 2025.
