An 18-storey building under construction has collapsed in the Eastleigh area of Nairobi. Emergency crews are searching through the debris amid fears that an unknown number of people are trapped underneath.

The incident happened at around 1 pm on Friday along a busy commercial street. Emergency services rushed to the scene immediately after the structure came down.

Responders Rush to Busy Commercial Zone

Police officers were deployed to the area to assist and coordinate emergency service providers. Nairobi police boss Issa Mohamed confirmed that officers were gathering more details as rescue efforts began.

“The house was about 10 floors but we are waiting for more as the responders rush to save lives,” he said.

The collapse occurred during a peak hour in the bustling neighbourhood. Authorities expressed concern that pedestrians, site workers, and passersby might have been caught under the falling debris.

The collapse caused widespread disruption across the commercial district. Crowds of local residents and traders gathered near the site while rescue teams worked. Traffic congestion also built up on surrounding roads, delaying movement through the area.

Conflicting Details Over Heights and Streets

Former Nairobi County Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria raised an early alarm on social media. He appealed directly for structural engineers, ambulances, and specialized rescue personnel.

“A 14-storey building has reportedly collapsed in Eastleigh 8th street, trapping people inside,” Mosiria stated.

He added: “We urgently need emergency response teams to mobilize ambulances, rescue personnel, structural engineers, and other relevant experts to help evacuate those trapped under the rubble.”

Mosiria further emphasized the critical situation: “EVERY SECOND COUNTS! Lives are at risk, and urgent action is needed to save those who may still be trapped.”

Initial reports presented conflicting accounts regarding the exact location and height of the structure. Some reports identified the location as 9th Street and the height as 18 storeys, whereas others cited 8th Street and 14 storeys.

Police officials noted the building stood at around 10 storeys. Authorities have not yet confirmed the precise cause or whether the construction had formal approvals.
