Comedian-turned-activist Eric Omondi has exposed a woman who allegedly faked being thrown out of her home by her husband in order to solicit financial help from well-wishers.

Earlier this week, a viral video showed a distressed mother being pushed out of a house while holding a child, with another young boy trailing behind.

Outraged Kenyans called on Omondi, through his Sisi Kwa Sisi initiative, to intervene.

Omondi quickly mobilised support, urging Kenyans to contribute to the woman’s well-being. Within hours, well-wishers had raised over KSh 1 million, which the comedian said would help the woman—identified as Joyce—secure a home and start a business.

However, Omondi later revealed that Joyce’s story was fabricated. Investigations showed that she and another woman, whom she claimed was her sister, had conspired to deceive Kenyans.

According to Omondi, the man seen in the viral video was not her husband but an acquaintance enlisted to play the role.

The child at the centre of the video also reportedly belonged to her friend, deliberately used to tug at the public’s heartstrings.

Omondi confirmed that the phone used to receive contributions had already collected over KSh 1 million. He handed it over to the police, and the suspects were detained at Kitengela Police Station for further investigations.

A Cautionary Tale of Deception

“This is very sad. These individuals tried to scam Kenyans by using innocent children,” Omondi said. “One of the principles of Sisi Kwa Sisi is doing due diligence before, during, and after a case. Thankfully, we uncovered the truth. The phone with the KSh 1 million is in police custody. We are now seeking guidance from Team Sisi Kwa Sisi on the way forward.”

Just a day earlier, Omondi had shared the viral video of Joyce being pushed out of a house, sparking widespread outrage.

Public figures like Betty Kyallo and DJ Lisney joined Kenyans online in condemning the man in the video, believing it to be a genuine case of domestic abuse.

Many netizens sympathised with the children in the footage, describing the incident as heartbreaking and traumatic.

What started as a wave of compassion for a mother in distress has now turned into a cautionary tale of online scams—and a reminder of the importance of due diligence in humanitarian efforts.
