Nairobi motorists should prepare for significant traffic changes this Sunday, as the National Police Service (NPS) has announced a series of temporary road closures and diversions to facilitate the smooth hosting of the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024).
According to the police, the closures will mainly affect key city routes leading to Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, where thousands of fans are expected to attend the continental football tournament.
Affected Roads and Diversions
Aerodrome Road will be completely closed from Madaraka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout.
Lang’ata Road: One lane will be shut between Madaraka and Lusaka roundabouts.
Mombasa Road: The one lane between Lusaka Roundabout and Bunyala Roundabout will be inaccessible.
Motorists approaching the city centre from Mombasa Road are advised to use Likoni Road through Enterprise Road near General Motors, or take the Southern Bypass via Ole Sereni.
Those using Lang’ata Road should consider Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road through Mbagathi Roundabout.
For those traveling along Thika Superhighway, diversions will also be in place. Vehicles leaving the CBD for Thika, Juja, or Ruiru should use Kiambu Road or the Northern Bypass. A roadblock will be mounted at the Ruiru Interchange, while motorists heading towards Thika Road from Nairobi must divert to Kiambu Road at Exit 4, as another roadblock will be enforced at Muthaiga.
Drivers traveling to Mwiki from Thika Superhighway have been directed to use the Ruaka–Baba Ndogo–Lucky Summer–Nairobi River–Mwiki route. Meanwhile, motorists from Githurai heading into the city are urged to use the Githurai 44 exit through Kiambu Road.
Additionally, fans without vehicle access passes heading to Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, will be required to use the service lanes at Exit 7 and Exit 8.
Police Advisory
The NPS confirmed that additional officers will be deployed to control traffic and enforce compliance with the temporary measures. Motorists have been urged to cooperate fully with officers on duty to ensure the smooth flow of vehicles during the tournament.
The police also cautioned that stern action will be taken against any drivers found violating traffic regulations.
These measures, authorities said, are necessary to ease congestion and guarantee security for the successful hosting of CHAN 2024 in Nairobi.
