When Kenya surprised two-time CHAN champions DR Congo with a hard-fought 1–0 victory on Sunday, 3rd August 2025, the conversation quickly turned to one man: Benni McCarthy. He's the newly appointed Harambee Stars head coach, and he's already making a big difference.

The South African football icon took charge in March 2025 on a two-year deal. He's quickly earning praise for bringing discipline, sharp tactics, and much-needed belief to a national team that has struggled with consistency and confidence for a long time.

From Champions League Winner to African Tactician

At 47, Benni McCarthy boasts one of the most impressive resumes in African football. He's still South Africa’s all-time leading scorer, with 31 goals in 79 international appearances. Most famously, he won the UEFA Champions League in 2004 with FC Porto, playing under the legendary José Mourinho.

He also left his mark in the English Premier League, scoring 37 goals in 109 appearances for Blackburn Rovers. He finished his playing career with West Ham United and Orlando Pirates.

After hanging up his boots, McCarthy moved into coaching.

He had successful stints at:

Cape Town City: Where he won the MTN8 Cup in 2018.

AmaZulu: Guiding them to their best-ever league finish and a historic CAF Champions League qualification.

Manchester United (2022-2024): Notably, he worked as a forwards coach, helping to improve talents like Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho.

A Tactical Shift for Kenya

McCarthy’s arrival signalled a fresh start for the Harambee Stars. He's known for his attacking style and a high-press system. He has also put a strong emphasis on developing young players and building mental toughness.

Against DR Congo, his tactics were spot-on. He made a surprising move, playing centre-back Manzur Suleiman in a holding midfield role.

This move was a stroke of genius, disrupting Congo’s rhythm and allowing creative players like Austine Odhiambo and Alpha Onyango to shine further forward. Odhiambo scored the decisive goal, securing Kenya’s first-ever CHAN victory.

“We needed bravery,” McCarthy told CAFOnline after the match. “I asked the boys to believe and play without fear—and they delivered.”

What’s Next for Harambee Stars?

McCarthy’s immediate impact has brought new hope to a team that often struggled to reach its potential. With upcoming matches against Angola and Tunisia, and important World Cup qualifiers on the horizon, fans are starting to believe again.

Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel recently voiced his support for McCarthy, calling him “the right man” to restore Kenya’s standing in African football.

If Sunday’s win is anything to go by, Benni McCarthy isn’t just rebuilding a team – he’s rewriting its story.
