Dr Linda Muthoni

A week ago, aKenyan doctor, Linda Muthoni, caused a frenzy online after posting a video on her social media stating firmly that she has a huge dislike for avocados.

"I'm tired of pretending, and I'm just going to say it. I need to get this off my chest. Whoever wants to be offended will be offended. I don't eat avocado. I simply don't. I don't like the taste of it,” Dr Linda said.

Muthoni revealed that her dislike for avocado often prompts disbelief and questions from viewers, with some asking if it is "illegal not to eat avocado" or if she is "the only Kenyan who doesn't eat avocado".

She also suggested that some people might only claim to like avocado due to "peer pressure."

Nameless commented on her Instagram post, encouraging her that she is not alone: “You are not alone! There are many hiding behind the shadows! But we are many!” Nameless wrote.

Chito Ndlovu

On June 14, 2023, a heated discussion on Kiss 100 FM further highlighted differing views on avocado consumption, particularly regarding how it should be eaten. Kwambox recounted being "so offended" after ordering breakfast and being asked if she wanted her avocado "with salt or with sugar".

For her, adding sugar to avocado transforms it into something fundamentally wrong.

She asserted, "God created this thing to be eaten as a food and not a dessert. What? Yeah. Once you put sugar, it is a dessert. This thing is a dish, okay? Best served either with salt or as God intended it".

Adding to the complexity of the debate, Chito Ndlove, who was Kwambox’s co-host, revealed an even more intense dislike for the fruit itself.

He stated, "For me, even the stomach will start rumbling. The whole thing about avocados just makes my stomach rumble. I don’t eat avocado; I despise it with passion. You bring me an avocado here and I’m out. I hate avocado.”

Uncommon stance among the Kenyan population. The debates on radio and online show that these personal food preferences can become a significant talking point, sparking both amusement and strong disagreement among the public.
