Kenya’s iconic Maasai Mara National Reserve has officially earned a place in the World Book of Records, UK, recognised as the site of the “World’s Greatest Annual Terrestrial Wildlife Migration.”
This monumental announcement, made on Wednesday, 16th July 2025, marks a significant milestone in Kenya’s conservation and tourism journey, cementing the Mara’s status as one of Earth’s most iconic natural wonders.
Each year, over 1.5 million wildebeests, zebras, and antelopes traverse the vast Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in a breathtaking display of survival and natural spectacle.
Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano celebrated the announcement as a “historic milestone and a moment of immense pride for the nation.”
She lauded the dedicated efforts of conservationists, local communities, and tourism stakeholders who have tirelessly safeguarded the reserve’s ecological integrity over the years.

In her remarks, CS Miano notably attributed the achievement in part to President William Ruto’s strategic leadership, referring to him as “Tourism Ambassador 001.”
She emphasised that the President’s unwavering commitment to positioning Kenya as a premier global destination had significantly contributed to the Maasai Mara’s growing international recognition.
“This global honour reaffirms what we as Kenyans have always known—the Maasai Mara is not merely a tourist attraction, but a living symbol of resilience, biodiversity, and the harmony of interconnected ecosystems,” she stated, underscoring the deep national pride associated with the recognition.
The Great Migration is widely considered a bucket-list experience for wildlife enthusiasts, who flock to the Mara each year to witness dramatic river crossings and intense predator-prey encounters.
Tourism industry leaders across Kenya have warmly welcomed the recognition, viewing it as a vital step toward enhancing sustainable tourism in the region.
They expressed hope that the prestigious accolade will spur increased investment, attract global partnerships, and unlock more funding for crucial conservation initiatives, ensuring the long-term preservation of this unparalleled natural heritage.
