President William Ruto’s son, George Ruto, has once again stirred public debate after a video surfaced showing his matatu driving recklessly around a roundabout on City Hall Way, near the Supreme Court in Nairobi.

This is not the first time George has drawn attention over his matatu business.

Earlier, he was spotted at a garage where a new matatu, believed to be part of his growing transport empire, was being customized.

This move follows the rerouting of another matatu in George’s fleet, known as ‘Manifest’, which was moved from Rongai to Embakasi after it faced criticism for reckless driving in the past.

Inside sources reveal that the new matatu, named ‘Doom’, will be packed with impressive features to attract passengers.

These include a 65-inch TV screen, a live DJ mixing deck, solar panels, and luxurious bucket seats imported from China.

The ‘Doom’ will be the first matatu in Kenya to have bucket seats arranged in a 2-by-1 layout, which reduces the usual 32 seats to 25 for added comfort and space. A DJ booth will also be installed to entertain passengers during their rides or special events.

The unveiling of ‘Doom’ quickly became a hot topic online after George Ruto was photographed standing next to it, holding a customized number plate.

The project is estimated to have cost between Ksh 13 million and Ksh 14 million, with the chassis and body alone costing about Ksh 6.8 million.

Earlier in 2024, George also made headlines after buying another high-end matatu called ‘Matrix’, which reportedly cost him Ksh 8.7 million.

Industry experts describe George Ruto as a serious matatu culture enthusiast who is investing heavily to grow his presence in Kenya’s transport sector.

While George’s investments are making waves, the recent reckless driving video has reignited discussions about road safety and the responsibilities of matatu owners.
