The Wanyama family, widely regarded as one of Kenya’s most influential sporting families, gathered on Saturday in Soy, Uasin Gishu County to bid a heartfelt farewell to their matriarch, Mama Mildred Ayiemba Osotsi Wanyama.

Mama Mildred passed away on June 14, leaving behind a lasting legacy of devotion, strength, and a deep commitment to both family and faith.

Her impact, however, reaches far beyond the walls of her home, she is credited with being the guiding light behind a household that has produced some of Kenya’s most accomplished athletes.

She was the wife of Noah Wanyama, a former footballer known for his time with AFC Leopards, and together they raised a family that has left an indelible mark on Kenya’s sports scene.

Her sons McDonald Mariga and Victor Wanyama have both excelled on international football stages, with Mariga breaking barriers as the first East African to play in the UEFA Champions League, and Victor captaining the national team, Harambee Stars.

Their brothers, Thomas and Sylvester, also followed in their father's footsteps into football, showcasing the family's deep-rooted connection to the sport.

Adding to the family’s rich athletic legacy is daughter Mercy Wanyama, a standout in basketball who has represented Kenya internationally, proving that sporting excellence runs through every branch of the Wanyama lineage.

Saturday’s send-off was attended by notable leaders including Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii, Soy MP David Kiplagat, Kapsaret MP Oscar Sudi, and Mogotio MP Reuben Kiborek, as well as friends, community members, and figures from Kenya’s sporting world who gathered to pay tribute.

Though Mama Mildred is no longer physically present, her influence continues to shine through her children’s achievements. Her legacy is one of perseverance, quiet strength, and the nurturing of greatness that has brought pride not just to her family, but to an entire nation.

Their sons, McDonald Mariga and Victor Wanyama, have flown Kenya’s flag high on the global stage. Mariga having made history as the first East African to play in the UEFA Champions League, and Victor serving as a long-time Harambee Stars captain and playing in top-flight leagues in Europe and North America.
