Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Ruger has opened up about his financial journey, revealing that he donated his first paycheck from music entirely to his church.
In a candid conversation with media personality VJ Adams, the "Girlfriend" hitmaker reflected on how his early earnings shaped his perspective on money and success.
“My first payment was about ₦500,000 (Ksh 41,000), and I gave all of it to the church,” Ruger shared. “I didn’t spend a kobo. Not long after, I received another payment of ₦1 million, and I was overjoyed. I remember spending it on little things like parfaits,” he recalled with a laugh.

Since then, Ruger said, his income has grown significantly, with multiple payments coming in over the span of a year. He emphasized how his relationship with money has evolved as his fame and fortune increased.
“Money changes people, no matter what anyone says. It changes the way you see and handle things,” he noted.
The singer also spoke about his ambitions, expressing admiration for American rap icon and entrepreneur Jay Z. “Some people are so wealthy, they live stress-free. That’s the level I’m aiming for. Look at Jay Z—no matter how often he’s called out, he never responds. That’s the kind of peace money can bring,” Ruger said.
The artist’s reflections shed light on the personal and professional growth that has accompanied his rise in the music industry.

Ruger rose to fame in early 2021 after signing with Jonzing World, a record label affiliated with D’Prince and Mavin Records. His breakout came with the release of his debut single “Ruger,” followed by the hit track “Bounce,” which quickly gained traction across Africa and beyond. With his signature eye patch, unique sound blending Afrobeats with dancehall, and bold lyrical style, Ruger carved out a distinct identity that set him apart in the rapidly growing Afrobeats scene. His music and persona quickly captured the attention of fans worldwide, cementing his place as one of Nigeria’s fast-rising stars.
