A police officer who shot an unarmed street vendor during Tuesday’s protests along Moi Avenue in Nairobi has been arrested, the National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed.

The incident, which was caught on video and has since gone viral, shows the officer discharging an anti-riot shotgun, striking the vendor in the head. According to a statement by police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, the victim—who posed no threat and was unarmed—was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.

"Following this incident, the Inspector General National Police Service ordered for the immediate arrest and arraignment in court of the involved officer. The said police officer has since been arrested," Nyaga stated.

In the same statement, the police expressed concern over the presence of what they referred to as "a group of goons armed with crude weapons" who had infiltrated the demonstrations.

"The service takes great exception and does not condone such unlawful groupings. Such individuals will be handled firmly, according to the law. Consequently, investigations have commenced to identify and deal with the criminals accordingly," Nyaga added.

The shooting has sparked widespread public outrage and intensified scrutiny over the conduct of law enforcement during protests. Calls for accountability and police reform continue to grow as Kenyans demand justice for victims of police brutality.
