George Ruto, President William Ruto’s son, is shaking up Kenya’s matatu industry with a high-tech, solar-powered vehicle named Mood, designed to offer both transportation and entertainment on the move.

Already the owner of two standout matatus—Matrix and Money Fest—George’s latest project is generating buzz for its innovation and ambition.

Fitted with solar panels, Mood is being hailed as a game-changer in energy management, tackling one of the industry’s biggest headaches: powering the array of screens, lights, and booming sound systems that characterise Nairobi’s flashiest rides.

“The solar panel setup addresses the high energy demand of souped-up matatus,” industry insider Collins Mokaya told TUKO.co.ke. “With solar, Mood will run everything smoothly—lights, multiple 65-inch TVs, and even a DJ set.”

More than a commuter vehicle, Mood is built for experience. It’s a 25-seater, unlike the traditional 32, to leave space for dancing and movement.

Bucket seats replace regular benches, while drink holders and custom plates elevate the onboard vibe. “It’s not just about travel—it’s about the journey itself,” Mokaya said.

In October 2024, George went viral after being spotted in the driver’s seat of Money Fest on the CBD-Rongai route.

Kenyans were surprised to see the president’s son behind the wheel of a matatu, prompting fierce online debate.

Critics argued that someone from his background should be investing in sectors like technology or green energy.

“In this tech era, where he could invest in innovation, he’s chosen a matatu?” one user, Nyabasa Danvas, posted online.

Another added, “When others are pursuing engineering PhDs abroad, he’s here with a matatu. This life has no balance.”

But others praised his down-to-earth approach and passion. “He’s doing what he loves—his last name shouldn’t limit him,” said Bakhita Esther.

“Kenyans complain if a president’s child avoids the public, and still complain when they get involved,” added Kenyan Philosopher.

Some pointed out that George’s appearance in the matatu wasn’t just business. His Money Fest drive coincided with 2023 Utamaduni Day celebrations, where the First Lady joined him to promote and celebrate Kenya’s matatu culture.

Even with public opinion divided, Mood is already being tipped for the prestigious “Kenya One” title—the honour given to the country’s most outstanding matatu.
