Kenyan gospel musician and philanthropist Karangu Muraya found himself at the centre of a dramatic incident in Murang’a town, where an angry mob chased him away just days after his high-profile visit to State House.
The altercation, captured in a video shared online shows Muraya being escorted to safety by police after locals confronted him, accusing him of political opportunism.
Muraya, known for his charitable acts and gospel influence, visited State House on 10th June, joining a group of Kikuyu artistes including Ngaruiya Junior and Martin wa Janet, who were spotted with Ruto earlier in June 2025.
These visits, intended to foster cultural dialogue, have drawn sharp criticism, with many alleging the musicians sought financial handouts amid Kenya’s economic struggles.
The Murang’a incident occurred as Muraya distributed flour to needy families, an act locals interpreted as a political gesture tied to his State House appearance.
Murang’a residents chanted “One Term” during the chase.
Police intervened with a rapid response unit, using a vehicle to shield him, highlighting the escalating security concerns in the region.

Muraya’s 2023 arrest for alleged incitement further complicates his public image, with some viewing his political ties as a continuation of that controversy.
Online reactions reflect this divide. @mr_izzlake commented on X, “Ni kama murima haitaki any association with the friends of the regime,” suggesting regional rejection of perceived regime allies.
@kasheshekaimati added, “Inafaa hivo bana,” endorsing the mob’s action, while @Rhymaholic urged, “We should unsubscribe them, report their accounts, boycott their shows,” amplifying calls for a cultural boycott.
The incident echoes recent events involving other Kikuyu musicians. Ngaruiya Junior and Martin wa Janet’s cheerful State House posts provoked backlash, with fans accusing them of provocation amid rising living costs.

Muraya’s management team released a statement on 11th June denying political motives, urging calm, and promising to address concerns, but no official investigation has been announced.
@Jbm_Evan wrote, “Peace, love and unity… being a traitor, you will regret.”
Some, like @mr_izzlake, see it as a rejection of regime ties, while others, per @kasheshekaimati, view it as justified retribution.
