Tanzanian music sensation Vanessa Mdee, once a prominent figure who graced African Voices in 2017 at the peak of her career, has undergone a profound transformation over the past eight years.
Her journey, marked by a dramatic shift away from the music industry and into a deeply spiritual, family-centric life with her husband Rotimi in Atlanta, is a compelling narrative of self-discovery, faith, and enduring love.

The Painful Farewell to Music
For fans who followed Vanessa Mdee's vibrant career, her departure from the music scene might have come as a surprise. However, the singer, known for her energetic performances and catchy tunes, revealed to CNN’s African correspondent, Larry Madowo that her decision was born out of a profound need for self-preservation.
"What I do not do anymore is I do not release music for the industry. I'm not part of the music industry. I have no interest in being a part of any chart anything," she candidly stated.
The reasons behind this significant pivot were deeply personal and rooted in her well-being. Mdee openly shares that her time in the music industry was "depleting my mental, spiritual, emotional, physical health in many ways".
She admitted to turning to "many different vices that were not good for me as a person that was depleting my being," ultimately reaching a point where "the music industry became extremely toxic for me". While she acknowledges this was her unique experience and not universal, she expresses immense gratitude for the past.
"I love that I had a moment in music that has shaped and paved the way for many young girls. I'm super proud of the work I've done and I'm I love my fans who still rock with me to date," she affirms, adding her gratefulness for the experience, exposure, and opportunity. This powerful platform, she believes, will now be used for "God's glory"

A Modern-Day Love Story Rooted in Faith
Vanessa's transformed life is inextricably linked to her union with Nigerian-American actor and singer Rotimi. Their worlds collided in 2019 marking the genesis of what they describe as a "modern-day love story".
According to her, this relationship is distinctively rooted in faith, shared values, and mutual growth. Now married and proud parents of two children, Rotimi and Vanessa have become a source of inspiration for millions. They openly declare their intention to be examples of what a kingdom marriage is.
Their initial encounter reads like something out of a romantic film. It was 2019, at the mainstage Essence Festival in New Orleans, where both were performing individually. They found themselves at a Spotify event where Rotimi was instantly drawn to Vanessa.
"She was sitting on a pool table and the lights were glowing and beaming," Rotimi recalls, his first thought being, "Yoh, who is this?". A mutual friend played cupid, introducing the two artists who would soon embark on a life-altering journey together.

A Shared Path of Spirituality and Family Life in Atlanta
The decision to build their lives together, centered in Atlanta, is a natural progression of their deep connection and shared spiritual journey. Both Vanessa and Rotimi come from backgrounds steeped in faith; they are both kids of preachers. Vanessa’s mother, a pastor who runs a church in Arusha, Tanzania, consistently tried to instill faith in her daughter. Even during her performing days,
Vanessa admits, "I would always pray. Always pray. Trust me, it didn't look like what it looks like now. I'd be praying and I had drinking not about that. But what I'm saying is that God has brought us a long way".
She sees the "hand of God" throughout her life's journey, emphasizing that her current life with Rotimi is "only God".
Their commitment to faith is evident in their daily lives. The couple currently hosts a Bible study, and Vanessa leads a women's conference, which she considers "our form of" ministry.
When probed about the possibility of starting their church, given their foundational dedication to faith and their kingdom marriage as an example to others, they received the question with surprise but open minds. They believe that if such a path is "meant to be, then it will be," and if "that's what we're told to do, then we'll do it," always giving "God all the glory".
