Kenyan-born, US-based comedienne Elsa Majimbo recently shared a surprising glimpse into her minimalist lifestyle, revealing she uses an old-school TV and lives without Wi-Fi at home.
In a TikTok video, she explained that she owns over 200 movies, which she watches on her vintage television. “It works just fine,” she said cheerfully. “This setup suits everyone involved—which is just me.”
When asked how she manages social media without Wi-Fi, Majimbo playfully dismissed the confusion, suggesting those puzzled by her approach might be “brainwashed.”
She also mentioned using an Amazon Echo, a hands-free speaker controlled by voice, to enhance her home experience.
Fans, particularly in Kenya where cellular networks are a primary internet source, were baffled by how she navigates the online world without Wi-Fi connectivity.
On Moving to America
Majimbo has previously shared the whirlwind story of her move to the United States. At 19, she was living in Johannesburg, South Africa, before relocating to the US at 20.
“It all started in Johannesburg,” she recounted. “I was celebrating when my friend Francesca suggested a trip to Cape Town. While there, another friend invited me to Ghana for a weekend, but I ended up staying the whole summer.”
She continued, “That was the last time I lived in Johannesburg. When summer ended, my team asked me to fly to New York. On my first day there, my manager took me for a fitting at the Valentino store, but I got so sick.”
That trip culminated in her walking the Met Gala, a dream opportunity that marked her US arrival.

Majimbo also spoke candidly about the thrill of leaving her parents’ home. While she remains close to her family, describing them as “literally my best friends,” she relished the independence of living alone.
“Living with them was great, but…?” she trailed off with a laugh. Having her own space meant embracing her own rules.
“It’s my roof, my rules. Friends can come and go as they please, even at midnight, without me explaining to anyone. That’s phenomenal,” she shared.
She also cherished the freedom to go out whenever she pleased, a stark contrast to her parents’ strict household. “They believe if you went out yesterday, you’re staying in today,” she said.
Reflecting on her independence, Majimbo added, “I’m not a wild child, but knowing I can choose what to do—or not do—without anyone’s permission? That’s chef’s kiss.”
