The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has released its annual State of the Media Survey for 2024, revealing key insights into the media consumption habits of Kenyans across television, radio, online platforms, and print.

Television Category 

Citizen TV, owned by Royal Media Services (RMS), remains the undisputed leader in TV viewership, capturing a commanding 53% of the audience—an impressive jump from 35% in 2023.

Inooro TV, also under RMS, ranked second with 6%, while K24 and NTV tied for third place at 5% each. Maisha TV followed closely at 4%. The report also noted the entry of DStv as a notable new player in the television space.

"From the respondents, Citizen TV emerged as the most watched TV station at 53%, an increase from 35% in the 2023 survey," the report stated.

"Inooro TV came in second at 6%, K24 and NTV were tied at 5%, with both dropping from 11% and 7% in the last year."

Radio Takes the Lead

Radio Citizen topped the list of most listened-to radio stations with a 12% share of the audience. It was followed by Classic 105 at 7%, and Radio Jambo at 6%.

Kameme FM – 5%

Milele FM – 4%

Radio Maisha – 4%

Radio 47 – 4%

Ramogi FM – 3%

Maina Kageni

These figures highlight the continued dominance of RMS-owned stations and a diverse landscape of vernacular and urban contemporary stations.

Digital News Platforms 

In the digital sphere, Tuko.co.ke emerged as the most visited news website in 2024, attracting 40% of online readers—a notable increase from 33% in 2023.

Other top news sites included:

Citizen Digital – 20%

Nation Africa – 13%

Standardmedia.co.ke – 11%

Pulselive.co.ke – 5%

Kenyans.co.ke – 4%

The Star.co.ke – 2%

The Mpasho Website

Platforms such as Ghafla, Kenya Moja, Mpasho, and Nairobileo.co.ke all tied with a 1% share.

"Tuko emerged as the most popular news website, with a notable readership of 40% in 2024 compared to 33% recorded in 2023," MCK noted.

"Nation Africa, Standard.co.ke, and Pulselive.co.ke had a significant positive change in terms of online readership."

Newspapers Still on Top Despite Decline

Print media continues to face a slow decline, but Daily Nation maintained its position as the most-read newspaper with 34%, down from 35% in 2023.

According to MCK, most readers purchase newspapers for coverage on news, politics, sports, advertisements, education, and special pullouts.
