Village Market, Nairobi’s iconic shopping, recreation, and lifestyle destination, celebrated its 30th anniversary in grand style with a spectacular black-tie gala at the Trademark Hotel.
Tucked in the heart of Nairobi's Gigiri area, Village Market has long been a beacon of culture, commerce, and community.
On a balmy Saturday afternoon (Saturday 26th April 2025), the iconic lifestyle and shopping destination marked an extraordinary milestone - 30 years since it first opened its doors.
The gala was attended by members of the diplomatic community, government representatives, the Gigiri neighborhood, the Runda Residents Association, Tree Estate residents, service and financial partners, tenants, and staff members.
The evening was a powerful testament to the relationships Village Market has cultivated over three decades — a true celebration of friendship, reflection, and growth.

The gala opened dramatically with a vibrant African dance performance by the Zamaleo Dancers, paying homage to the diverse Kenyan and East African communities through song and dance.
Guests were further captivated by stunning ballet performances from Dance Centre Kenya and high-energy showcases from the Mathare Kids, highlighting Village Market’s enduring support for local arts and culture.
From a modest concept envisioned in the early ‘90s to a sprawling hub that now blends upscale retail, entertainment, dining, and family experiences, the Village Market has grown alongside Nairobi itself, becoming a cherished part of the city's urban fabric.
I was among the select few invited to witness and cover the grand celebrations, and what unfolded was nothing short of spectacular.

The atmosphere was electric, a blend of nostalgia and festivity. Decor inspired by Kenyan heritage adorned the venue, as invited guests mingled freely, reminiscing about the mall’s journey through the decades.
It was clear that this wasn’t just a celebration of a commercial entity, but of a living, breathing space that had touched many lives.
In conversations with the founders and current directors, the story of Village Market’s evolution emerged as one of vision, resilience, and constant reinvention.
What started with a handful of shops and a central food court has today flourished into a thriving hub with over 200 shops and two award-winning hotels, Tribe and Trademark Hotel, modern office spaces, and innovative recreational offerings like the famed Ozone Trampoline Park and the Village Bowl.

It’s a place where tradition meets trend, and the 30th anniversary served as both a tribute to the past and a bold statement about the future.
Reflecting on the journey, Hamed Ehsani delivered a heartfelt address, underscoring the transformative vision that began in 1995 when the late Mr. Abbas Ehsani, Mr. Mehraz Ehsani, and Mr. Hamed Ehsani envisioned a vibrant African market where people could connect and shop.
Throughout the evening, guests enjoyed nostalgic tributes celebrating the Village Market’s history of construction, expansion, and community impact.
As part of the commemorations, three legacy stores — including Pomodoro, Salon Malibu, and Jit Gems — were recognized for their unwavering presence since inception.

Additionally, nine distinguished staff members were honored for dedicating 30 years of service to the Village Market family.
“Our story is not just about market stores. It is about people, the memories made, and the communities forged,” said Dr. Manoj Shah, Director of Village Market and Chairman of The Kingsway Group of Companies.
Faustino and Lorenza Trufelli, owners of Pomodoro, remarked, "We are honored and amazed by the incredible evening organized by Village Market to commemorate our and their 30 years of service. We thank all our clients — without them, reaching this milestone would have been impossible."
The evening culminated in a dazzling performance by Bollywood Bhangra dancers, symbolizing the enduring spirit of unity and celebration that defines Village Market.

Opened in April 1995, Village Market has continuously expanded to accommodate the needs of Nairobi’s growing commercial and residential diplomatic district.
As a world-class shopping, lifestyle, and entertainment destination with over 250 outlets, Village Market is a cosmopolitan hub that brings together people from diverse cultures.
Beyond shopping, Village Market is a leader in recreational innovation in East Africa.

At the hub, food lovers can enjoy over 45 restaurants, serving an exquisite variety of dishes, from vegetarian delights to gourmet meat selections.
The mall’s unique architectural design seamlessly blends modern style with an African touch, offering both intimate indoor settings and open-air luxury.
The Village Market management signed off the night with an assurance that they remain committed to nurturing spaces where connections are made, communities are built, and memories are treasured.
