Sean “Diddy” Combs, the iconic rapper and music mogul behind Bad Boy Records, is facing the most serious legal battle of his career.
His federal trial begins on 5 May 2025 in New York City, with jury selection kicking off proceedings at the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Courthouse.
Diddy, 54, is facing a string of serious charges, including racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, and transportation to engage in prostitution. If convicted, he could spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Who is Diddy?
Diddy—also known over the years as Puff Daddy, P Diddy, Love, and Brother Love—has long been a towering figure in American music and entertainment.
Rising to fame in the 1990s, he helped launch the careers of artists like Mary J. Blige, The Notorious B.I.G., Ma$e, and Faith Evans. His label, Bad Boy Records, dominated charts and reshaped hip-hop.
Beyond music, Diddy has been a successful entrepreneur, partnering with major brands like Cîroc Vodka and earning accolades, including a Global Icon award at the MTV Awards and a Grammy nomination in 2023.
But now, the focus has shifted from his legacy to his legal troubles.

What Is He Accused Of?
In the federal criminal case, Combs is charged with:
Racketeering conspiracy
Two counts of sex trafficking
Two counts of transporting individuals for prostitution
The racketeering charge, the most serious, encompasses disturbing allegations of kidnapping, drugging, and coercing women into sexual acts, often involving threats or firearms.
During a high-profile raid on his Los Angeles mansion, authorities reportedly discovered evidence supporting the claims, including large quantities of drugs and more than 1,000 bottles of baby oil—allegedly for “freak off” sex parties.
Prosecutors claim that Diddy used his power and influence to create an ecosystem of abuse, intimidation, and silence.
Civil Lawsuits & Public Backlash
In addition to the federal charges, Diddy is battling dozens of lawsuits from men and women across the U.S., accusing him of rape, sexual assault, and intimidation.
Many of these lawsuits emerged following a now-settled legal action filed by his ex-girlfriend, singer Cassie (Cassandra Ventura), in late 2023, accusing him of years of abuse and sexual violence.
The most explosive moment came in 2024, when CNN leaked CCTV footage from 2016 showing Diddy physically assaulting Cassie in a hotel hallway.
The video sparked global outrage and prompted a public apology from the rapper.
“I take full responsibility for my actions in that video. I was disgusted then when I did it. I’m disgusted now,” Combs said.

Despite his apologies, Diddy maintains his innocence, calling the lawsuits “sickening” and suggesting they are attempts at a “quick payday.”
His legal team argues he is being targeted due to his race and fame, describing his lifestyle as that of a “swinger,” not a criminal.
Detention and Trial Outlook
Since his arrest on 16 September 2024, Diddy has been held at Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
His lawyers describe the facility as having “horrific” conditions, citing overcrowding, under-staffing, and violence. However, a judge denied his bail, calling him a serious flight risk.
There are also allegations that Diddy has tried to influence witness testimony while in custody.
The trial is expected to last at least four weeks, with the prosecution requesting three weeks to present its case and the defence asking for one. Cameras will not be allowed in court, but proceedings will be open to the public.
What’s at Stake?
If convicted of racketeering, Combs could face life in prison. The sex trafficking charges carry a minimum sentence of 15 years, and the transportation charge could add up to 10 more years.
For now, all eyes are on the courtroom as one of hip-hop’s most recognisable figures fights to preserve his legacy—and his freedom.
