Bensoul, the owner of the Lions of Sudah music label and former Sol Generation signee, has opened up about why he is not a gospel artist—despite being raised in a deeply religious environment.

Speaking on KTN’s Art of Living, the celebrated musician reflected on his upbringing in Embu County, describing his childhood as adventurous and full of the typical experiences of rural life.

“I had a very playful and adventurous childhood. I was one of those kids who would leave school and head straight to church,” he shared.

“They had a studio, and I’d go there to teach myself how to play instruments. Other times, I was at the river swimming or helping out with chores like feeding cows.”

Though the church was a major part of his early years, Bensoul explained that his shift to secular music came from a desire to speak to people beyond the church walls.

He believes that music—regardless of genre—should reflect real-life experiences and connect with diverse audiences.

“It’s just a choice,” he said when asked why he doesn't sing gospel music. “I feel like my message goes even beyond the church system. I don’t want to box myself into church music alone.”

He added that not performing gospel doesn’t make him any less spiritual. “I can’t really say I’m a church boy. I love God, but I’d say I’m more spiritual than religious,” he affirmed.

Despite his secular focus, Bensoul noted that he hasn’t ruled out composing gospel music entirely. “Songs like ‘Niombee’ and ‘Elshaddai’—you’ll still get them from me,” he said, suggesting that his spiritual side still finds its way into his music, just not exclusively through gospel.

Asked about his broader mission as an artist, Bensoul distanced himself from the award-chasing mentality many in the industry adopt. For him, it’s not about trophies, but about touching hearts.

“I know so many artists get into music with one aim: chasing a Grammy. For me, it’s not about that. I believe musicians are given a responsibility to speak to people in a unique way,” he explained.

“If your goal is just awards, you’re chasing something that wasn’t your divine assignment.”
