The battle between President William Ruto and impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has intensified in Mt Kenya East with a by-election in Mbeere North likely to be the litmus test.
Both camps have intensified engagements in the region as realignments take place.
Following the appointment of Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Ruku to the Cabinet, a by-election will offer a perfect chance for the two camps to evaluate their influence after the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.
Former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi, former Igembe North MP Maoka Maore and ex-Tigania West MP David Kariithi have shifted allegiance to Gachagua.
The three led a delegation from Tharaka Nithi and Meru counties last week to Wamuyoro, Gachagua’s new political nerve centre.
Gachagua said the meeting discussed the preparations for the launch of his new party.
“It was a productive and inspiring meeting, as we delved into our vision and the significant role both counties will play in shaping the future of this movement. We must fix this Nation,” Gachagua said in a dispatch after the meeting.
“To the great people of Meru, the land of my late mother, I love you. Our resolve for a better Kenya is unstoppable.”
On Sunday night, the former DP was scheduled to address the people of the Mt Kenya East region through an interview on local station Weru TV for “a candid and truthful conversation”.
In a promo, Gachagua said he would discuss “matters our nation, our future and our progress as a people and Kenyans”.
But while the former Mathira MP is scheming against his former boss, his successor Kithure Kindiki has also intensified his activities to forestall any inroads by the former DP.
On Saturday, Kindiki was in Kavutiri in Runyenjes constituency, where he met with more than 5,000 coffee farmers and leaders of 24 cooperative societies in Embu county.
