In October 2016, American reality TV star Kim Kardashian experienced a terrifying ordeal that would alter the course of her life and career.
While attending Paris Fashion Week, Kardashian, then 35, was resting at the discreet Hôtel de Pourtalès when, in the early hours of 3 October, five men disguised as police officers burst into her suite. They handcuffed the night receptionist, forced their way into her room, and held her at gunpoint.
Kardashian, alone and without her security guard, had been lying in bed when she heard the stomping footsteps approaching.
Attempting to dial 911 – which does not function outside the United States – she was trying to call her security team when the intruders stormed in.
“They kept saying: ‘the ring, the ring!’” she later recalled during an interview with David Letterman. Startled and confused, she hesitated before realising they were demanding the $4 million (KSh 520 million) engagement ring gifted to her by then-husband Kanye West.
The robbers seized the ring, additional pieces of jewellery, and €1,000 (KSh 140,000) in cash.
During the attack, one of the men pulled Kardashian towards him. Fearing for her safety, she later said she believed she was about to be assaulted.
Instead, the intruders bound her with zip ties and duct tape – a technique known in France as saucissonnage – and left her tied up in the bathroom.
"These are a group of elderly down-and-out thieves, they're always broke, they're forever involved in convoluted plans… and they're facing a huge celebrity and they don't even know who she is," Patricia Tourancheau, the crime reporter and author of the book Kim and the Grandpa Robbers.
After the men fled, Kardashian managed to free herself. Her security team arrived shortly afterwards. Traumatised by the experience, she gave an immediate statement to French police before flying back to the United States at dawn.
The robbery made headlines around the world. Estimated losses were valued at around $10 million (KSh 1.3 billion), making it one of the biggest jewellery heists targeting a celebrity in recent history.

Investigations revealed several mistakes on both sides. Despite Kardashian’s relaxed approach to sharing her movements on social media, security measures at the time were criticised.
Simultaneously, the robbers left crucial DNA traces, and CCTV footage captured them fleeing the scene.
Within months, French police arrested ten individuals, mostly men in their sixties and seventies, later dubbed the "grandpa robbers" by the media.
Among them were Yunice Abbas and Aomar Ait Khedache, who confessed to their roles in the heist.
Court documents suggest the burglars primarily relied on Kardashian’s public posts to track her whereabouts.
However, police also suspect a transportation company insider may have passed on additional details, though this has been strongly denied by the accused’s lawyer.
Despite the huge financial value of the stolen jewellery, much of it is believed to have been melted down or broken up to avoid detection.
Kardashian’s engagement ring, however, was deemed too recognisable to sell and has never been recovered.
For Kardashian, the event was life-changing. In interviews and on episodes of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, she spoke openly about the trauma she endured.
Fighting back tears, she admitted she feared for her life during the attack and reflected on how the incident shifted her priorities.

Following the robbery, Kardashian took an extended break from social media and tightened her personal security significantly.
Her family also adopted a more cautious approach to sharing real-time updates online.
Entertainment journalist KJ Matthews noted that the robbery "made her less materialistic" and caused the Kardashian family to rethink their public lives in the social media age.
Now, nearly nine years later, Kim Kardashian is expected to appear as a witness during the trial in Paris.
