NCA director leads celebrations of World Engineering Day

The National Construction Authority (NCA), through its executive director, Engineer Maurice Akech, called for more collaboration, inclusivity and innovation as the world marked World Engineering Day.

The day, which is celebrated annually on March 4, recognizes the essential role of the engineering field towards modern society and sustainable development.

The 2025 theme was Unleashing the Power of Engineers to Advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)'.

It highlighted the role of engineering in tackling global challenges such as climate change, clean energy and urban development.

The director emphasized the crucial role of engineering in advancing matters of sustainability, infrastructure and development.

He also stressed that engineering must be open and collaborative, calling for cross-sector partnerships and investment in engineering education and research to prepare future engineers for emerging challenges.

''Engineering is not just about structures; it's about shaping a better future. Through innovation and inclusivity, engineers will continue to drive sustainable global progress,'' he said. 

Kenya has made remarkable milestones to enhance its engineering sector with a notable step of the establishment of the Nation Building Code 2024, effective March 1, 2025, which provides clear construction guidelines, ensuring safety, sustainability and resilience in Kenya’s built environment.

According to the agency, the engineers have also taken the lead in government initiatives such as the affordable housing agenda through cost-effective, sustainable solutions, further supporting the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

Those in the engineering field also partake in infrastructural projects, from road networks to energy efficiency, which continue to drive Kenya's economic growth.

In this regard, the day underscores the importance of the engineering industry in achieving the United Nations's Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), including climate action, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, industry, innovation and infrastructure, among others.

As the world celebrates engineers' contributions, Engineer Akech underscored the importance of creativity, sustainability and collaboration in building a prosperous and resilient future.
