President William Ruto on Wednesday witnessed the signing of 14 contracts to establish 113 electricity mini-grids in arid and semi-arid counties at Stima Club in Ruaraka, Nairobi
The signing of the contracts involved Kenya Power Company, Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation and private contractors.
The Improved Access to Electricity through Mini-Grid and Stand-Alone Solar Systems will be carried out under the Kenya Off-Grid Solar Access Project.

According to the President, the Sh10 billion Off-Grid Solar Access Project deepens access to affordable energy, particularly in remote and rural parts of Northern Kenya.
He said the project will also help in powering the growth of enterprises and expansion of economic opportunities for all.
“The project furthers our goal to universal electricity coverage by 2030 and 100 per cent transition to clean energy, catalysing sustainable, equitable and inclusive growth,” Ruto said.
The signing of the contracts brought together REREC CEO Rose Mkalama and her Kenya Power counterpart Joseph Siror.
Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi and PS Alex Wachira were also present.

“Kenya thanks the World Bank and the African Development Bank for making this project, which will benefit 14 counties, a success,” Ruto added.
The targeted counties include Garissa, Isiolo, Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu, Mandera, Marsabit, Narok, Samburu, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Turkana, Wajir and West Pokot.
