Kenyan Volleyball legend Janet Wanja was laid to rest on Friday at the Lang'ata Cemetery. The former national team player succumbed to cancer at the age of 40.

The funeral service was attended by her former colleagues, close friends and immediate family members.

Her Eulogy

Janet Wanja Mungai, born on February 24, 1984, at Mater Hospital in Nairobi, was the third child of WO1 John Mungai (RTD) and Serah Mungai. She grew up in Kahawa Garrison, attending Kenyatta University Primary School and Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls’ High School, where her volleyball journey began. Under the guidance of Coach Juma Walukhu at Kahawa Barracks, her talent blossomed, leading to an exceptional volleyball career.

At just 20 years old, Wanja represented Kenya at the Athens 2004 Olympics, and over the next 15 years, she became a celebrated setter for the Malkia Strikers. Throughout her career, she won five African Nations Championship titles and competed in global tournaments such as the FIVB World Championships and World Grand Prix. Wanja also played for Kenya Pipeline, KCB, APR (Rwanda), and professionally in the UAE before retiring in 2020 after a distinguished career.

Beyond volleyball, Wanja was deeply rooted in her faith, influenced by her mother’s devout Christianity. She was an active participant in church and youth activities at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Kahawa Garrison and later at Chrisco Church. Known for her beauty, love of singing, and vibrant personality, Wanja was beloved both on and off the court.

She remained connected to her Kahawa Garrison community, actively participating in the GAFFE TRIBE welfare group. Janet Wanja Mungai will be remembered as a decorated athlete, a devoted Christian, and a warm-hearted individual who inspired many.

Before her burial, a funeral service was held at Kasarani stadium. It was attended by hundreds of mourners and sports enthusiasts.
