The Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) has announced mandatory registration for all sugar packers in the country.
This bid by the AFA is aimed at improving the quality and traceability of sugar products in Kenya.
With the directive set to take effect on October 15, 2024, AFA has directed companies involved in sugar repackaging to provide their details.
The move is part of the efforts to ensure that sugar quality is monitored and maintained across all retail outlets.
The registration process falls in line with the provisions of the Crops Acts No 16 of 2013 which mandates that all sugar packers meet the right directives to ensure safe sugar consumption by the market.
As per the public notice issued by the AFA on October 15, 2024, sugar packers are required to fill a Form 9 (an application for registration of sugar repackaging) available at the AFA website.
The AFA demands that the form should be accompanied by the trademark registration certificate, sample of the brand, certificate of incorporation or business name, valid tax compliance certificate, ID or passports of directors, weight to be repackaged Kgs or grams) and KeBs approval and compliance with other labelling requirements.
The requirement for registration highlights Kenya's dedication to enhancing food safety and quality, particularly in light of recent concerns about low-grade products infiltrating the market.
Sugar packers are advised to complete the registration process to avoid the potential for their business disruptions.
