A debate over marital roles has intensified across Kenyan social media following the launch of gospel musician Mercy Masika’s "Becoming a Wife" masterclass.
Actress Catherine Kamau, known as Kate Actress, has joined the discussion after singer Akothee publicly endorsed the programme.
The conversation centres on gender expectations, female empowerment, and marriage in modern society.
Kate Actress Highlights Alternative Aspirations
Kate Actress offered a different perspective on Instagram Stories. She reposted an online comment from user @megmegnimo that received 968 likes.

"We are not against marriage; it really is a beautiful thing, but it’s not the ONLY thing women aspire to."
Kate Actress listed other goals for women, noting achievements like "Degrees, Title deeds, financial wellness, mental wellness.. etc ! Stay guided !"
The comment endorsed by Kate Actress criticised the focus placed solely on female partners.
"This is tone deaf in my opinion considering the feminine crisis we are facing at the moment," the post read.
The user questioned the lack of courses for men.
"How many of these classes do we see for the other gender as compared?" the comment asked.
The author added, "We really need to step out of being the only ones fighting for, praying for and holding together marriages on our own."
The user concluded, "It is the year 2026, and we are tired of this backward rhetoric."

Akothee Registers Herself and Daughters
Musician Akothee revealed on Instagram that she plans to join the masterclass. She confirmed she will enroll alongside her three daughters, Vesha Okello, Rue Baby, and Fancy Makadia.
"I want to be a good wife to a good husband if I haven't exhausted my chances."
Akothee argued that public dialogue on marriage is necessary.
"This is a very important topic, and I believe it is one of the conversations we need to have if we are to rebuild and strengthen our society," she wrote.
However, Akothee stressed that men should also receive guidance.
"It is high time men also started having conversations about what it takes to become good husbands," she stated. She added, "Bora husbands pia wachukuwe classes tukutane middle au sio?"

Masika's Masterclass
Reverend Mercy Masika introduced her course as a guide for building Christian partnerships. Masika wrote on social media, "This is for every woman who believes marriage shouldn't be miserable, who wants to get it right and trusts that God's way is best."
Masika married her husband and manager, David Muguro, in 2008. The pair met in 2007 at a wedding reception where she performed. In 2020, they marked 12 years together.
Masika has previously maintained that successful unions require deliberate effort.
"It's not about love but wisdom, knowledge and understanding," she stated.
The masterclass continues to generate mixed reactions across online platforms.
