Parents are being encouraged to connect emotionally with their children before correcting their behaviour, especially during the school holidays. Child psychologist Florence Ochanda says building a connection first helps children feel understood and makes it easier for parents to address difficult behaviour. She encourages parents to listen to their children, acknowledge their feelings and guide them calmly rather than immediately resorting to criticism or punishment.
