Popular Kenyan cross-dresser Johnny the Hairdresser has opened up about navigating public spaces while expressing his identity, revealing why he makes a point of informing club bouncers and staff about himself before entering entertainment establishments. Speaking during an interview with media personality Kwambox, Johnny explained that his experiences have taught him the importance of finding common ground with society while remaining true to himself.
The entertainer recounted an incident when he went to a club with a friend and female companions, explaining that he has developed a personal approach to avoiding misunderstandings whenever he visits such establishments.
According to Johnny, informing security personnel about his identity beforehand helps ensure that people around him understand who he is in case a disagreement or unexpected situation arises.

"There was a time we went with my friend to a certain club and we went with the ladies. So one thing that I learnt about this cross-dressing business, because this is a business at the end of the day and at the same time this is me living my truth," he said.
Johnny explained that while expressing his identity is important to him, he has also learnt to navigate societal expectations carefully.
He noted that living differently from what society considers conventional can attract criticism, making it important to approach people in a way that minimises unnecessary conflict.
"You cannot be different and the society is against you na bado ukuwe na kiburi or pride. You have to have a common leverage with the common mwananchi," Johnny added.
Why Johnny Informs Club Staff
The entertainer said he ensures that bouncers and other staff members know who he is before he proceeds into a club.

He explained that this precaution gives him some reassurance because there are people who can confirm that security personnel were aware of his identity when he entered the premises.
"So what I do when I go to a club, I make sure the bouncers and the staff get to know who I am first, ndo just in case kuna issue at least niko na watu wanajua," he explained.
Johnny added that making staff aware beforehand could help prevent confusion if questions arise about his presence in particular spaces within a club.
"At least they knew Johnny was a guy na tumuingiza akakuja ndani," he said.
His remarks highlight some of the practical considerations he says come with navigating nightlife while cross-dressing, particularly in environments where people may make assumptions based on appearance.
Johnny on Living His Truth
Beyond his approach to nightlife, Johnny's comments reflect his perspective on balancing self-expression with the realities of social acceptance.
By describing cross-dressing as both a business and a way of living his truth, he acknowledged the personal and professional dimensions of his public identity.
His interview with Kwambox has also brought attention to the everyday decisions he makes to navigate public spaces while seeking to minimise misunderstandings.
Johnny's account offers a glimpse into his experiences as a public figure whose appearance and identity can attract attention, and the measures he says he takes to move around entertainment venues with greater peace of mind.
